This spring, HarvardX and the Harvard Alumni Association (HAA) are excited to offer HAA1x: HarvardX for alumni, an experimental online HarvardX primer exclusively for Harvard alumni. Please join the Harvard University Club of Houston as we add a fun in-person element to this online learning by hosting our own HAA1x Discussion Group from 4 to 6 p.m. Enjoy a cold beer, a glass of wine or an ice cold specialty Margarita, and small bites at the beautiful Rice University area home of Charles and Tina Browne on Sunday, March 30th for a reception introducing the launch of HarvardX. What is HarvardX
This learning program is designed to give us, as alumni, a taste of curated HarvardX content, including faculty conversations and we'll explore a wide range of topics, from neuroscience (on March 30th) to poetry and Einstein to ancient Greece and China and computer science, all with celebrated faculty! And, there is no cost for alumni to participate in HAA1x! Our time together at the Discussion Group will allow us to connect in person for discussion, conversation, questioning and collaborative learning. - like being back at Harvard!

There are two steps to the registration process. First, you should register at the link above for our March 30th reception introducing Harvard1x, our first discussion group. The ticket price for the 'launch reception' is $15 per person, FREE for all Harvard University Club of Houston Supporting level members {Platinum, Sponsor, Patron and Benefactor}, and includes the reception and admission to the first HarvardX discussion group. Please register by March 26th.

BIOGRAPHY:
Michael S. Beauchamp, Ph.D.
Associate Professor, Department of Neurobiology and
Anatomy, UTHealth Medical School at Houston, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Neuroscience, Baylor College of Medicine, Adjunct Associate Professor, Department of Psychology, Rice University Dr. Beauchamp completed a B.A. in Biology cum laude at Harvard University (1992), a Ph.D. degree in Neurosciences at the University of California, San Diego supported by a Howard Hughes Medical Institute Predoctoral Fellowship (1997) and postdoctoral fellowships in functional brain imaging and cognitive psychology in the Intramural Research Program of the National Institute of Mental Health (2005). Dr. Beauchamp joined the Department of Neurobiology and Anatomy at the University of Texas Medical School at Houston in 2005 as an Assistant Professor and was promoted to Associate Professor in 2011. He holds adjunct appointments in the Department of Psychology at Rice University and the Department of Neuroscience at Baylor College of Medicine, and is director of the Systems and Cognitive Neuroscience Track of the Neuroscience Graduate Program.
Dr. Beauchamp's research examines fundamental mechanisms for visual perception and multisensory integration in the living human brain. His research has discovered a specific location in the human brain, the superior temporal sulcus, that is critical for two of our most important cognitive functions: decoding the body and face movements of other humans, and integrating these movements with their vocalizations, both speech and non-speech. This discovery has been used to better understand brain dysfunction in patients with dyslexia, autism spectrum disorders, and stroke.
Dr. Beauchamp has authored 51 peer-reviewed publications that have been cited 4296 times. He is on the executive committees of the UT Health MRI Center and the Baylor College of Medicine Center for Advanced MRI. He has served on the program committee of the Organization for Human Brain Mapping and is a standing member of the NIH Center for Scientific Review Mechanisms of Sensory, Perceptual and Cognitive Processes study section.
