Professor Thomas Forrest Kelly teaches First Nights: Five Premiere Performances, which is one of the most popular courses at Harvard College and generally draws between 400 to 700 students each year.
He will discuss
the first performance of Mozart's opera Don Giovanni in Prague on
October 29, 1797. The singers, the company, the action, the look of the theater:
how much of what Mozart's audience experience is also part of our own
experience? We will study a few musical moments in detail, and think about the
social situation in which a "dramma giocoso" about a multiple seducer
of women can be funny.
A very limited number of the book First Nights at the Opera will be available for purchase for $25 and Professor Kelly will sign each book at the event. Biography
Professor Kelly has been Professor of Music at Harvard University since 1994 and was chair of the Department of Music from 1999 to 2005. His research interest is in medieval chant, where he has identified and published an important repertory of early chant from southern Italy. His book The Beneventan Chant (Cambridge University Press) was awarded the Otto Kinkeldey award of the American Musicological Society for 1989. He is the author of First Nights: Five Musical Premieres (Yale, 2000), named a New York Times Notable Book of the Year, and of First Nights at the Opera (Yale, 2004). His book Early Music: A Very Short Introduction, appeared in 2011 from Oxford University Press. He is a Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters of the French Republic, and a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
