From the President...

Dear Members of Houston's Harvard Community,

I would like to welcome you to the Harvard University Club of Houston’s website, where you can find information about our Club and upcoming events. Not only is the Club exceptional, with a vibrant Harvard alumni group, we are proud of the strong ties we have developed with the local Houston community through schools and scholarship outreach programs, summer community student fellowship funding, community service projects, and funding for local Houston teachers to attend the Harvard Graduate School of Education summer programs. I hope you will join or renew your Harvard University Club of Houston membership because we need your support.

The Houston Club has developed a varied programming calendar that has drawn in not only longtime Houston Harvard alumni but also recent graduates. We have a monthly Young Alumni Happy Hour at a different location each month so new graduates can get to know not only their fellow alums but also the city of Houston. Our Global Networking Nights have attracted not only our own alumni but those from other clubs around the world. We host an Annual Meeting and Back to School Picnic each August for all the members in our club and for new students and their families. Some years we have had pony rides and a petting zoo at our picnic for a complete family experience. We welcome all our members to our annual holiday party held at the house of one of our alums. Partnering with the Yale Club, we have a Harvard Yale Game viewing event each year at a private venue with a rented big screen and a buffet lunch.

2015 was an enormous year for the club with the launch of our flagship H2H Inititative, pioneering a connection between Houston and Harvard by sending teachers to Cambridge for continuing education courses at the Graduate School of Education.  The Club secured a partnership with HISD to match funding and help select teachers to participate in this groundbreaking program.  To start 2016, the Club is having a black tie Crimson Award Gala, honoring Laura E. Arnold (AB '94) of the Laura and John Arnold Foundation, to provide a solid financial base for the Initiative to expand its reach.  Featured speakers include Jim Ryan, Dean of the Harvard Graduate School of Education and our emcee, Dominique Sachse of KPRC Local 2 Houston.

The scale and scope of our programs allow for information access and networking. These include programs partnering with the Houston World Affairs Council, the Houston Asia Society, the Harvard Business School of Houston, and other local clubs such as Yale and Princeton. Past events have included a reception with Harvard Professor Paul Volcker, noted China scholar, speaking about Deng Xioaping; a talk by renowned stem cell scientist Harvard Professor Robert Sackstein; a private tour of the Houston Federal Reserve Building; and a historical boat tour of Houston's Buffalo Bayou. Additionally, the club sponsors many popular sports events including a Houston Rockets event with Harvard alum Jeremy Lin in 2012, a reception with Harvard basketball coach Tommy Amaker in 2013, and an annual Harvard Red Sox night with the Houston Astros.

I hope you take a moment to join or renew your club membership for 2016. It is important for the Club to grow its membership so that we can continue to interview student applicants to Harvard College, sponsor Houston Harvard undergraduates for summer community service fellowships, and offer you events like those we have had in the past as described above - such as the Crimson Award Gala, our exclusive Jeremy Lin event, and the various HarvardX programs.
